Kunsthaus Zürich is one of the best art museums in Switzerland, and boasts the world-class collections of modern art. This exhibition marks the first large-scale introduction of its collection in Japan. 74 masterworks by extremely important artists in art history, from the impressionists of the 19th century to the surrealists of the 20th century, will be presented.

The most intriguing work in the show is six-meter-wide “The Water Lily Pond in the Evening” by Claude Monet, in which visitors may find the presage of the abstract expressionism which appeared decades later. Also on display will be a number of works by Marc Chagall, whose marvelous power of imagination and a remarkable sense of color continue to fascinate people around the world.

This exhibition will also be a unique opportunity to enjoy masterpieces of artists who have strong ties with Switzerland such as Ferdinand Hodler, Alberto Giacometti, and Oskar Kokoschka.

Moreover, we present a concentrated assembly of masterpieces by great artists that provides visitors with a marvelous experience of the flow of great modern art movements; Paul Cézanne, Henri Rousseau, Edvard Munch, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dalí are among the sparkling lineup.

All of the works on display are representative works of the above mentioned prominent artists. The collection of the Kunsthaus demonstrates the Swiss people’s great love of art and the rich cultural foundation behind this love. This exhibition will provide viewers in Japan with a wonderful opportunity to deepen their understanding of Switzerland as a “treasure house of art”.
